Partnership Visa

Online Registration

Non-New Zealanders can get residency in New Zealand if they have a partner who is a New Zealand citizen or resident. The Partnership Visa enables you to gain residency or an open work visa. If you’re issued a residency with a partner visa, you can live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely. The government expects the couple to meet strict requirements before the residence is approved.

What type of relationships qualify for a Partnership Visa?

Partnerships are defined as two people of the same or opposite gender who have lived together in a real and stable relationship for at least 12 months. The types of relationships that are accepted as partnerships include:

A Legal Marriage

A Civil Union

A De Facto Relationship

Partnership Visa Approval

Immigration New Zealand will grant your application if your relationship is honest and stable and you have lived together for at least 12 months before requesting New Zealand residency. Being legally married or not is not a determining factor. The guidelines apply equally to straight and gay couples.
